Özet: Medici ailesinin tüccarlıktan başlayan yükseliş hikayesini konu edecek 8 bölümlük mini dizi.
Medici ailesi 14. ve 17. yüzyıllar arasında Floransa'da (İtalya) yaşamış güçlü ve etkin bir ailedir. Aile üç papa (X. Leo, VII. Clement, XI. Leo), çok sayıda Floransa hükümdarı ve daha sonra Fransa kraliyet mensupları yetiştirmiş, ayrıca İtalyan Rönesansı'nı etkilemiştir.
Medici isminin kökeni kesin olarak bilinmese de tıp kökenli olduğu düşünülmektedir (medico). Aile mütevazı bir başlangıçtan sonra ilk defa bankacılık ile güç kazandı. Medici Bankası Avrupa'nın en başarılı ve saygın bankalarından biri olmuştur. Buradan yola çıkarak Mediciler önce Floransa'da, sonra da İtalya ve Avrupa'da politik güce kavuştular.
Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici Bankacılık işine giren ilk Medici idi ve Floransa devlet yönetiminde etkinleşti. Daha sonra oğlu Cosimo de' Medici 1434 yılında gran maestro olarak Floransa şehir devletinin gayri resmi başı oldu. Alessandro de' Medici 1537'de ilk Floransa dükü unvanını aldı.
Sanatçılara destek vererek tiyatro alanına katkı sağlamışlardır. 1485'te İtalya kentlerinde özellikle burjuva sınıfı oluşmaya başlıyordu. Tiyatro alanındaki gelişmeler, oyunların popülerliği İtalyancaya çevrilmeye henüz başlanmış olmasıyla daha geniş bir kitleye ulaşmıştır. Böylelikle 16. yüzyılda Latincenin yerini yerel dil alıyor.
Medici ailesi, 15. ve 16. yüzyılda iktidar mücadelesi, servetleri ve itibar yönünden Floransa’yı oldukça etkilemiştir. Usta taktikleri ve entrikalarıyla önemsiz zengin bir aile konumundan İtalya’da zengin ve güçlü bir aile konumuna gelmiştir.
