Özet: Dünya nüfusu için korkunç bir felaket yaşanır. Gezegendeki hemen, hemen herkes, parlak bir kuyruklu yıldızın gelmesiyle kör olur, yıldızın enkazı karanlık gökyüzünü aydınlatır, ancak bu parlaklık kalıcı göz hasarına neden olur. Muhteşem ama ölümcül! O sırada hastane de yatan, fantastik havai fişek gösterisini izleyemeyen, Bill Masen kendini zorlu bir dünyada bulur. Yalnızca kendisinin gören olduğuna inanırken, görebilen ruh eşi, Jo Pleyton bulur. Günler ilerledikçe daha fazla görebilen insanlar bulurlar, birlikte bir gelecek inşa etmeyi planlarlar. Ama bir problem vardır. Keşfedilen özel bir bitkinin tohumlarından, petrolün kalitesinin yükselten yağ elde edilmektedir. Şimdiye kadar çiftliklerde ve özel bahçelerinde güvenle saklanan, "Triffid" adı verilen, yürüyen, etçil olan bu bitkiler, kör olup orada burada ölen, çürüyen, insanların etinin tadını keşfeder. Kalan kör ve çaresizlerin birçoğu Triffid'in öldürücü zehirli darbeleriyle avlanır. Geride kalanlar ise gizemli şekilde yayılan hastalığın pençesini enselerinde hissederler.
